If you feel like your house is constantly getting messy no matter how often you clean, you’re not alone. Most people think the solution is doing more big cleans… but that’s actually the problem.
The real secret to a consistently tidy home isn’t more cleaning, it’s small daily habits that stop the mess from building up in the first place. These are the 5 simple things I do every day that keep my house under control without spending hours cleaning.
1. Reset Your Sink Every Time You Use It
After brushing your teeth or using the bathroom, take 5 seconds to wipe down the sink. This stops toothpaste, water marks and grime from ever building up, which means your bathroom always looks clean without needing a proper scrub.
After I brush my teeth and wash my face in the morning, I take the face towel I used and dry the sink and any splatter with it. I then take it stragith to the laundry and wipe down anything else that is on my way.
2. Do a “One-Touch Tidy” as You Move
Instead of letting things pile up, get into the habit of taking something with you every time you leave a room. Walking to the kitchen? Take that cup. Heading to the laundry? Grab a towel. Going upstairs? Pick up whatever doesn’t belong.
You’re not doing a full tidy, you’re just never leaving things behind. This habit alone can completely eliminate clutter without needing a dedicated clean-up session.
3. Make Your Bed Every Morning
Making your bed instantly makes your whole room feel clean and put together, even if nothing else is. It sets the tone for the day and helps prevent that “everything feels messy” feeling before it even starts. Think of this as your daily reset anchor.
I like making my bed before I leave the bedroom and turning on the robot vacuum so it gets any dust that was made from making said bed. I also lay out my pyjamas for the night under my pillow.
It makes the bedroom a really calm and tidy space to return to when you're ready to relax for the night.
4. Close the Kitchen Every Night
This is the one that changes everything.
Before you go to bed:
- Load and run the dishwasher (quick wash is perfect)
- Wipe down your benches
- Put everything back where it belongs
- Unload the dishwasher
Waking up to a clean kitchen removes so much mental load from your morning and stops dishes from ever piling up.
I utilise the quick clean on my dishwasher ALL the time. I like to turn it on, run through the rest of the house with a quick tidy, have my shower and then come back and unload it so it's fully empty for the morning.
5. Keep Laundry in Motion (Not in Piles)
Laundry feels overwhelming when it piles up. The trick is to never let it get to that point. Instead of using baskets, throw clothes straight into the washing machine throughout the day. Run it at night, move it in the morning, and put it away before bed.
This is my biggest tip for those who feel like they can never get on top of laundry. Don't overcomplcate it by separating and folding. Just throw it into the machine throughout the day and you never have clothes piled up anywhere. I also never take my laundry out of the dryer unless I'm ready to put it away then and there.
