How I Make My Bed Look Better Than A Hotel

There is nothing better than climbing into a bed that feels soft, fluffy and luxurious at the end of the day. People often ask how I make our bed look so full and cosy so here are the exact things I do to make our bed look extra luxe and inviting.

1. Always Upsize Your Bedding

We have a king bed, but I use a super king quilt. The extra size gives the bed much better coverage on the sides and creates that oversized, luxurious look you see in hotels and magazines.

I also use queen pillows inside standard pillowcases. Because the pillow insert is slightly larger than the case, it creates that beautifully plump, overstuffed look instead of flat pillows that disappear into the bed.

2. Invest in a Feather Quilt

I use a feather and down quilt all year round, and it has completely changed the look and feel of our bed. It stays fluffy, drapes beautifully and gives the bed that cloud-like appearance.

The one I use is from Amazon and costs just over $100, which I think is incredible value considering how much more luxurious it makes the bed feel.

One thing to know is that it may arrive looking a little sad and flat. When mine arrived, I took it outside, gave it a really good shake, hung it on the clothesline in the sun for the day, then shook it out again before putting it on the bed. After that, it fluffed up beautifully.

3. Fold Your Quilt Over Twice

When making the bed, I don't pull the quilt all the way to the top. Instead, I fold the quilt over twice at the top of the bed. This creates extra loft and gives the bed that thick, layered hotel look. It also helps showcase your sheets and pillows and makes the entire bed look more styled and inviting.

4. Layer Your Pillows

A bed instantly feels more luxurious when it has layers.

I usually arrange:

  • Sleeping pillows at the back.
  • Decorative pillows or European pillows behind them.
  • A smaller cushion or lumbar pillow at the front.

5. Give Your Quilt a Daily Fluff

It sounds simple, but it makes a huge difference. Each morning, give your quilt a quick shake before making the bed. This redistributes the filling, adds loft and helps maintain that fluffy appearance. It takes less than a minute and keeps your bed looking freshly made.

I used to have an expensive wool quilt and it was so heavy and terrible. I took a bit of a plunge and got a cheapy feather one from Amazon and it has paid off big time. We've had ours for 5 years now and it's held up great, looks amazing, and works well for us in all seasons.
